CORFU

The beautiful Queen of the Ionian Sea!

Corfu is a Greek Ionian island that serves as a charming passage between the Eastern and the Western world. Corfu has lots to offer as an island, combining rich Venetian heritage, beautiful natural surroundings and vibrant multiculturalism thanks to the mix of both Catholic and Orthodox religion on the island, making this a truly Mediterranean travel destination that puts visitors under its spell!

Also known as Kérkyra, Corfu, unlike the rest of Greece, never fell under the Ottoman oppression. As a result of this, a due to the influence of the Venetians, the French and the British over the centuries, Corfu as an island has primarily become part of the Western rather the Levantine world.

The island’s capital is also named Corfu, and a rich vein of culture runs through the city and the island as a whole. The first Greek University (the Ionian Academy), the first Philharmonic Orchestra and the First School of Fine Arts were all founded on the island of Corfu.

Corfu is a magical destination all year long, and its best known attractions are its cultural events – with colorful music events, culinary feasts, religious festivals, carnival celebrations (heavily influenced by the Venetians), and one of the most impressive Easter celebrations in all of Greece.

The endless green forests and beautifully clear azure blue forests that dominate the island offer something for nature loving travellers too. From Corfu you can also visit the small islands of Paxi and Antipaxi, islands with great cosmopolitan style due to the many yachts that moor in their ports and harbours during the summer.
